“Indoor tennis courts grow the game we love and USTA Northern is thrilled that The Fort is so close to reaching its capital campaign goals for 2019,” Becky Cantellano, USTA Northern Executive Director said. “Not only are these courts enjoyed by thousands of passionate players across the metro area, but the facility also serves as a destination for many more in our tennis family; through hosting coach workshops, tournaments, and special outreach events, the impact of The Fort on tennis in our area is beyond measure.”

It has been an exciting year at The Fort, highlighted by the ribbon cutting of the new walkway connecting the front and back bubbles to the building in January, and the completion of Phase II with the grand opening of the front bubble complete with a new air-supported dome, the addition of a ninth court, the installation of 40 new LED lights and energy-efficient air conditioning in September. The Fort is now entering the final phase of its Capital Campaign which includes:

  • Mandatory replacement of the air-supported structure over the back courts

  • New LED lighting in the back courts

  • Energy-efficient air conditioning

  • Upgraded parking facilities with new lighting, security cameras and 28 additional spaces

  • New sound systems in both domes.

By making these mandatory improvements, the Fred Wells Tennis & Education Center will be able to complete the renewal of its lease with the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board and continue providing tennis and life skills programming to the community and our TennisWorks after-school participants for years to come.

“We are so grateful for the continued support of USTA Northern as we FORTify Our Future and get ever closer to our year-end Capital Campaign goal of $1 million,” Esther Tsai, Fred Wells Tennis & Education Center Executive Director, said. “This wonderful challenge pledge is another example of USTA Northern’s tremendous commitment in promoting and developing the growth of tennis.”
